Synopsis
A Dispute: an experiment for quarantine (after the play by Pierre de Marivaux, 1744), Devised by PLA 306 for Randolph College
A Zoom room, circa 2040, twenty years into an endless quarantine. An Aristocratic and her Beau meet for date night and attempt to settle an age-old debate in a very contemporary way. What begins as a social experiment — with live human subjects — quickly expands, and by the end of the evening, assumptions are exposed, and binaries exploded. Inspired by the play by Marivaux, a debate on 18th Century sex is given a 21st Century renovation in order to interrogate notions of gender, fidelity, and identity.
Comedy, satire, and classical French theatre tropes combine to speak boldly in troubled times.
